Some of the attendees of the final social event for 2008-2009.

In May, Dan Schuster, a Mechanical Engineer and member of the Canal Society of Ohio provided a talk accompanied by a paper hand-out that reviewed canals from ancient times to the present. Most were surprised to learn how many canals were built and operated in the State of Ohio during their years of operation and that it was the canals that provided the low cost transportation needed to make Ohio very wealthy. Dan covered briefly the elements of a canal system and the method of operation. Fred Wahl, a Mechanical Engineer and volunteer on the Ohio & Erie Canal in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park brought scale models he had made of a lock and all the major types of canal boats. His models are completely detailed on the interior and exterior and the lock is a “working” model, though without water. He discussed the details of the lock and the reasons for the different canal boat designs.
